The Best Series of 2025: What Was Actually Worth Watching

The Best Series of 2025: What Was Actually Worth Watching

In a year defined by excess, formulas, and platform sprawl, this list filters the global avalanche of series to highlight the titles that managed to rise above the noise.

The proliferation of TV series goes on. Even if the market has slimmed down a bit, the yearly flood of new releases is still downright overwhelming. Estimates suggest that around 500 series are produced every year in the United States alone, and that worldwide the number climbs past 4,000. Only a slice of that actually reaches us—but even that slice is enormous, especially when you factor in the number of hours each show demands. The audiovisual industry is clearly still looking for its new balance after the boom years. My hunch is that it hasn’t quite found it yet.

What it has perfected, though, are its vices and formulas: endless crime shows built from the same blueprints, aggressively bland comedies, and a growing wave of mystery series in full Agatha Christie cosplay. And that’s before we even get to the mountain of true crime and reality TV, which I’ve skipped entirely—for lack of time, brain space, and basic patience. All told, I’ve watched—fully or partially—around 130 series this year. Quick math: that’s about two solid months of life, eight hours a day, devoted exclusively to watching shows. Which feels… excessive.

Still, in that vast ocean of “content,” there are pearls. Truly good series. Shows that stand out because there’s someone behind them actually thinking—trying to escape formulas, chasing an authorial voice, leaving a mark. I’ve included 76 of those series here. Not all of them are great, not even close, but they all seemed at least decent: watchable, engaging, sometimes surprisingly so. If we’re being strict, maybe 30 or 40 really matter—but there’s an audience for everything, and expanding the field of recommendations doesn’t seem like such a terrible idea.

So here’s the list, which also includes Argentine series, a few docu-series, and one particularly noteworthy re-release. Below, there’s a chart breaking down the selections by platform—a useful way of seeing how each service curates (or doesn’t) its output. Yes, Netflix dominates in volume, because it produces and buys everything. But in relative terms—quantity versus quality—platforms like HBO Max, Disney+, and especially Apple TV+ tend to be far more selective.

What follows, then, are my Top 60 international series, my Top 10 Argentine series, and a handful of extras. Consider this less a definitive canon and more a survival guide.
